The rise of the charity sock
Posted 17th February 2012 by Katrina

Giving to charity; it’s that thing you do when you’re feeling kind/flush/guilty/upset about particular wrongdoings that have flashed across your TV screen. You can climb a mountain, cycle across a country (or, for those of us who are too lazy, sponsor people that do!) or even just throw a few coins in a bucket to give charities a bit of a boost. |

Comic Relief has successfully included socks as part of its Sport Relief campaigns for years, seamlessly interweaving the sale sporty sock merchandise with its push to get people active – both with the common goal of trying to raise as much cash as possible for all the projects it supports. And this year a whole month is being dedicated to socks as part of a charity drive. ‘Socktober’ is the brainchild of the Free Kicks Foundation, which aims to auction off famous peoples’ socks during the month of October. |

Fundraising officer, Catherine Smith, said: “We use socks to highlight the area of the body most commonly affected by landmines, and they are a cheap and simple way to support MAG. “For every pair of MAG socks sold, we can clear around 2 square metres of land, making it free from landmines and other dangerous explosives.” |

| And if that’s not a good enough reason to purchase a pair, I don’t know what is. |
SockShop imitates art
Posted 10th February 2012 by Katrina

As you may have guessed, we are rather barmy about socks. And what we love is discovering other people who love them as much as we do, like John Dowswell. The Sheffield artist’s latest project has seen him create images of socks and plant them around the city. To see some of his creations, and the quirky spots he left them in, click here. Now as tempted as we were to head off to Sheffield and find these socks, it is a bit far from our lovely mill in Bolton (we do only have an hour’s lunch break!). So we decided to raid the warehouse and plant a couple of fetching Elle and SockShop socks around HQ for everyone else to discover. Check out our efforts below! |

Students wow us with their Christmas designs!
Posted 1st February 2012 by Katrina

Now I know you’re probably sick of the sight of anything Christmassy, but I had to share these! We challenged a local secondary school to draw a Christmas novelty sock for us, with the winning design being sold as part of our collection next winter. We had hundreds of entries ranging from simple and traditional to wacky and hilarious. Six fantastic drawings have been chosen to go through to the next round, with each being mocked up by our design team, and then turned into a real sock. The winner will be chosen from one of the socks.

They all look brilliant so it’s going to be really tough deciding which one will win. If you have a favourite please let us know in the comment box below, on Facebook or Twitter. Katrina x |
Imagine a world without socks
Posted 26th January 2012 by Katrina
Today I found out that Albert Einstein, ‘the father of modern physics’, one of the most prolific intellects of modern history, did not wear socks. This great, albeit dishevelled, man did not consider it important to dress his feet for any occasion. |

| And it got me thinking, what if Einstein’s attitude to socks had, excuse the pun, cottoned on? |

| So I think we can all agree, Einstein was wrong on this one! |

The face behind the legs...
Posted 18th January 2012 by Katrina
|
Sarah Tunnicliffe. You may not know her name, you might be able to place her face, but if you are a SockShop shopper, you will definitely be familiar with her legs. Yes, Sarah is a fantastic legwear model whose bottom half can be seen displaying a number of our socks and tights right across the SockShop website. She recently came into the studio to model the Elle Autumn/Winter 2012 range for the packaging revamp we have planned. I snuck into the studio to meet Sarah and find out a bit about the face behind the legs. |
![]() |
|
I also wanted to see what a legwear photoshoot actually involves. As her top half wasn’t going to be photographed, would Sarah turn up in her PJs, no hair or make up, with just glammed up feet? Take a look at the shots to find out... |
![]() |
| Sarah steadies herself to make sure she is in the right position for the camera |
![]() |
| A quick change is needed to make sure all the socks are photographed |
![]() |
| Sarah uses the bar to balance herself so that she can position her feet at the best possible angle |
|
So it appears that even when their faces aren’t going to be photographed, models still turn up glam, tanned and generally fabulous, how annoying! Joking aside, Sarah did an amazing job, and I'll hopefully be able to put up the results of the shoot in a sneak peek of the new Elle packaging design. Keep your eyes peeled... |
Happy New Yurt: A stylish (but wet) start to the year!
Posted 10th January 2012 by Katrina
| The SockShop team has kicked off the New Year with a bang (or, more appropriately, a splash) by heading off into the rainy wilderness for the Elle Autumn/Winter 2012 photoshoot. Yes, while most folks are spending the first couple of weeks in January counting their pennies, starting the detox and dreaming of longer and warmer days, here at SockShop we are preparing for next winter - when we can share with you the fantastic range of socks and tights that will be available. And what better a place to display our gorgeous new styles than in a yurt up a hill in the Lake District! What’s a yurt, I hear you cry? Well it is a wood-framed structure which originates from central Asia (and not, as one SockShop team member thought, Albania!). Ours looked like this… |

…and made for a fantastic location. |
Throw in our gorgeous model Sophie, and the brilliant hair and make-up team Lauren and Nat, and we had the makings of an amazing shoot. |

It was cold, it was windy, it had only just stopped raining, but Sophie was a real pro and did a great job modelling some of the gorgeous new styles that will be out this year. |
|
The outside locations were everything we hoped they would be, rugged, dramatic, beautiful; but they were also some things we hoped they wouldn’t be, namely wet and slippery! However, the whole team pulled together to make sure we nailed the shots. Our very own photographer Rick even gave Sophie a lift to one particularly pretty spot… on his back! |

Luckily our beautiful (and warm) yurt also provided us with plenty of opportunities to get some fantastic photos. |
The items and the actual pictures from the day will be up on the SockShop website later in the year, but here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect… |

M*A*S*H The Long John Flap
Posted 21st December 2011 by Rhiannon
![]() |
With the cold weather as it is, when I finish a day of working for SockShop I get home and put my PJs on and curl up on the sofa with a nice cuppa & watch M*A*S*H. One of the episodes inspired me to write this blog. If you watch M*A*S*H you'll know the characters I'm on about but if not, then you'll have to watch it to find out :) Basically, it was about some long johns that Hawkeye had received as a present from his father. Everyone at the 4077th camp try everything they can to get hold of them as they're having a very cold Christmas. First of all, Hawkeye lends them to his best friend, McIntyre who is getting a cold so needs to stay warm. McIntyre (stupidly) loses them to O'Reilly in a poker game. McIntyre then swaps them with the chef for some warm food. Frank Burns (being his usual, mean self) tells the chef to give him the long johns or he will dock his wages. They were then stolen by Klinger who confessed all to Father Francis who then handed them over to Lt. Colonel Henry Blake. Luckily, Hawkeye gets them back after removing Lt. Colonel Henry Blake's appendix which means Hawkeye is all warm again. Unfortunately, this great programme is based in the 1950s during the Korean War so they didn't have internet access or a mobile phone to order any online. So, instead of going through all of the trouble that they did to wear those warm, comfy long johns, why not buy them from us :) Have a great Christmas & New Year! Rhiannon x |
The Monstrous Climb Of Sock Mountain...
Posted 16th December 2011 by Dave

We've been overwhelmed with orders for the festive season, our poor little sock monsters just couldn't cope on their own, so in step the guys with the 'cushy office jobs'. It really is a case of all feet on the deck, management, designers, I.T, office juniors, mums, dads, aunties, uncles, long lost cousins... you get the idea. I generally like to think that I keep myself active outside of work, going to the gym, playing football etc. but I have to say, these last few weeks have taken their toll on my body. I've just completed my 8th straight day of picking all the lovely socks our lovely customers have been ordering from us. Basically 7 hours of walking up and down aisles, stretching up, bending down, and on many occasions spinning round! All this walking (and aching) got me thinking… Using a clever little Smartphone App (by the way our new mobile site is brilliant) which works as a pedometer, I've calculated that today, I personally, have walked over 11.5 miles! That means that within a week, I have walked over 80 miles! If I then take into consideration that we've had an average of 6 people collecting the socks that equates to nearly 500 miles a week (over 2 million men’s sock laid out tip to toe, literally)!! With a total of over 35000 calories burned (I think we'll all deserve to over indulge this Christmas!). Anyway... I suppose by this point you're asking “what's the point of the Blog entry”, well, apart from keeping you up to date with the entire goings on in our amazing sock emporium, I thought I'd use all this walking to test some of our wonderful socks... Day One: Firstly, I have to explain that on day one, I didn't know what I was in for, I mean “how hard can it be?!”... Very! I started this 'expedition' wearing my 'every day socks' SockShop Colour Burst Socks (in the very lovely Mustard colour): Now these obviously aren't a walking sock, but never the less, the kept my feet surprisingly comfortable, as well as adding a little colour to my day. Day Two: I then moved on to a thermal sock as it’s not the warmest place in our sock monsters cave of sock, so I went for the warmest I could see… Heat Holder Socks (long red ones to be precise). Very comfortable, they kept my feet cosy and warm all day. Nice and thick to stop my feet rubbing on my shoes. So comfy in fact, that I've got some on as I type this! Day Three: Today I was feeling a little more sporty, maybe it was the glimmer of the sun shining through the clouds for once!? So on went some Pringle Full Cushion Sports Socks. Comfortable fit and left me with dry, fresh feet at the end of the gruelling day! I think I'll be investing in a few more pairs of these! Day Four: Well I have to admit, this isn’t actually day four, I forgot to ask for more samples to test out… but it still counts! I managed to get some Jeep Luxury Terrain Socks… brilliant product! Really comfortable and warm, the cushioning on the heel and toes certainly helps. So here we are 80 miles and a billion pairs of socks later, and with feet that aren’t sore or blistered! I wish I could say the same for my legs! I hope you enjoyed my, well, story I suppose, and my first blog entry. Keep Warm, Dave |
